FONSFAQ: Cockatiels

It's time for three_weeks_for_dw again, and a whole bunch of people are doing the FONSFAQ project, as started by dingsi. I think this is an excellent time to get this community going!

Here are the rules:

If you have a question you would like answered, or think of a prompt whose answering would help others just getting started with cockatiels, comment with your question/prompt and include the word "PROMPT" in the subject.
If you see a question/prompt you would like to claim and answer, leave a reply to the comment starting with the word "TAKEN".

Prompts can be anything cockatiel or general pet bird related, from the most basic cockatiel 101 type questions on general care and handling to more advanced prompts about cockatiel genetics, history and behavior.

I'll edit this post to compile a list of the prompts as they appear and who has taken them. If you've taken a prompt, be sure to post your answer to cockatiels when you're done!

Prompts:

What is the history of the cockatiel? Where did they come from and how did they end up as companion birds?

How do you determine if a cockatiel is male or female?

Are there any movies, TV series, books or other media that have shown cockatiels as pets?

What's a good way to make a cockatiel like you?

I have a total of 5 cockatiels-

Willow: 4yr pied
Zoe: 5yr pearl
Jinx: 1yr white face
Charlie: 3yr pearl pied white face
Spike: 1yr normal

I haven't take too many pictures lately, but I do have a few of Jinx and Charlie, though. They are both my little babies and love to come out and sit on the couch with me.

There's only 3 pictures, but if you want them under a cut, please say so and I will.

Belated Intro

Been a while since there's been a post. :) I'm one of the moderators here, and I am owned by a plucky little cockatiel named Nibbles (aka Ms. Bird) who is about 14 years in age. She's usually a pretty chill bird, and is happy as long as she's in the same room as her humans. She earned the nickname of Chicken from when she was much younger, our neighbors had chickens and she would sit in the bottom of the cage and cluck to herself. She would stop if she noticed us, because apparently wishing she was a chicken was too embarrassing. ;)

She does little quirky things from time to time, but she will stop as soon as she notices a camera. Her favorite spot is sitting on top of the medicine cabinet door in the bathroom while I'm showering. Lately her thing has been to put her head under her wing looking like a headless bird waving the other up and down, and shaking her her tail feathers. Then she'll lean against the bathroom mirror hanging upside down with her wings fully open and coo to herself. Its so cute, but she'll stop as soon as I'm done with my shower. I've tried letting her shower with me to see if that's what she wants, but water is Evil. What a weirdo!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to welcome you to the community, cockatiels! I'm your friendly moderator, flyingfluff I'll be watching over this place with the help of delladea. Feel free to join and make a post here every now and then. The rules are posted on the profile page of the community so please familiarize yourself with them. I think the only rule not listed is that you must have fun! I want this to be a warm and friendly place people can come to share stories and seek out advice.
